Ancient City of Tlos: 4000-year-old Lycian City

Founded around 2000 BC in Fethiye, Turkey, the ancient city of Tlos is among the oldest as well as major Lycian cities. It was the sports center of the Lycian state and even held the title of “the most glamorous metropolis of the Lycian Union.” Later it became a Roman territory, and then the episcopal center of the Byzantine Empire. The local people lived in Tlos until the 19th century AD.

There are traces of each period in the ancient city. The Agora, amphitheater, and baths reflect the influences of the Roman Empire while the slope is full of Lycian arts and tombs. There is also a well-preserved Byzantine basilica with seven gates. Moreover, there is the fortress of Bloody Ali on top of the hill, representing the Ottoman period. The most famous tomb in Tlos is the tomb of Bellerophon who, according to the legend, was sent to kill the fire-breathing monster, Chimera to redeem himself. According to the myth, gods help him in his quest by giving him Pegasus. After slaying the Chimera, Bellerophon marries the daughter of the king, thus creating the genus of Lycian royal dynasties.
